I wanted to portray John William Polidori not only as himself, but also as Ianthe, the butterfly of Kashmir. Rather than drawing butterfly wings, I chose to cast their shadow across his face, suggesting a second identity hidden within his own. His name is crossed out beside him, reflecting how, in the presence of Lord Byron, he could never truly claim authorship of ‘The Tale’ as his own.
