The musical The Tale: April Fools explores the story behind “The Vampyre: A Tale” and the relationship between Lord Byron and John William Polidori. The musical draws parallels between the novel’s characters and their real-life counterparts, ultimately revealing that Ianthe, the butterfly of Kashmir, represents John, while Ruthven, the vampire who loved her, represents Byron. I reimagined this connection through a butterfly whose wings hold the silhouettes of two men, capturing the tragedy of a love concealed within another story in the most beautiful way I could.
